US President Donald Trump has said that Iran has assured Washington it will not charge tolls or impose additional fees on ships passing through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump said Iran had informed the United States that vessels transiting the waterway would not face any tolls, insurance-related charges or other fees.
“Iran has advised the United States that there will be no tolls, no insurance costs, and no charges of any kind imposed on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote.
He added that if the information proved to be inaccurate, ongoing discussions with Tehran would be terminated immediately.
Trump did not clarify whether Iran’s position would remain unchanged after the current 60-day period of negotiations between the two countries.
Iran has repeatedly maintained that it is considering charging service fees for maritime operations in the strait rather than imposing transit tolls on vessels. The proposal has drawn opposition from the United States, which argues that the waterway should remain open to international shipping without additional charges.
On Tuesday, Iran and Oman said they would review the level of fees that could be charged for services provided in connection with the management of the Strait of Hormuz. Both countries also reaffirmed what they described as their sovereign rights over the key maritime route.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important shipping corridors, handling a significant share of global oil and gas exports. Any changes to its operation or access arrangements are closely watched by governments, energy markets and the international shipping industry.
